courage to speak out.

I logged on to the internet today, and noticed an article on the ninemsn homepage titled: ‘Scorched beauty’s triumph.’

The article is about a 26 year old woman, Katie Piper; a British model and tv presenter.

In March 2008, her jealous ex-boyfriend raped her, beat her and stabbed her in the arms. Two days later, he had hired a man to throw a cup of sulphuric acid into Piper’s face. This left her with horrific burns that affected her skin, eyes and throat.

She has since undergone 40 intensive sessions of surgery, and revealed her new face at a promotion of the Katie Piper Foundation yesterday.

This story left me speechless. For a woman to go through the amount of trauma she has experienced, she speaks out for others in her situation with such courage and passion.

The Katie Piper foundation works towards raising awareness of the struggle of burns victims, as well as other people suffering from disfigurement.

“Beauty used to mean to me being the person with the best figure, the prettiest person walking into a room — that’s what I thought beauty was. But I have realised that is was nothing — it was a false and superficial view. I hope by sharing experiences the Katie Piper Foundation can help other disfigured people to build in confidence, to stand tall and feel beautiful too.”
